  Vuelta por el cielo de Lhasa

  Lhasa, la principal ciudad del Tíbet, está en un amplio valle fluvial a unos 3.650 m. El río Lhasa recorre el sur de la ciudad, y sobre las montañas pardas que la rodean se extiende un cielo de un azul intenso. El aire es limpio y el sol pega fuerte, así que en un día despejado el cielo parece muy cercano. De ahí viene el nombre de la ruta.

  Suroeste de Lhasa · puerto a unos 4.800 m, lago a unos 4.400 m

  Kamba La y el lago Yamdrok

  El Yamdrok es uno de los grandes lagos que los tibetanos consideran sagrados. Está a unos 4.400 m y su color pasa del turquesa al azul profundo según el tiempo y la luz. El lago se adentra entre las montañas en muchos brazos, así que desde arriba su forma resulta muy recortada.

  Ruta del Té y los Caballos, de Dali a Lijiang

  La Ruta del Té y los Caballos era una antigua vía comercial en la que el té de Yunnan y Sichuan se cambiaba por caballos tibetanos. Las caravanas de caballos y mulas cruzaban altas montañas con su carga, y en el noroeste de Yunnan siguen en pie los pueblos antiguos y los mercados que surgieron a lo largo del camino.

  Carreteras de acantilado de los Taihang

  Los montes Taihang se extienden de norte a sur por los límites de Henan, Shanxi y Hebei, en el norte de China. La roca rojiza forma acantilados de cientos de metros, cortados por cañones profundos.

  El Pamir y la carretera del Karakórum

  La carretera del Karakórum empieza al sur de Kasgar, en Xinjiang, en el extremo occidental de China. De camino a Pakistán cruza la meseta del Pamir, con cumbres nevadas de más de 7.000 m a ambos lados.

• Thirteen of us, staff included, rode the Tea Horse Road for ten days from April 6. Near Lijiang, the 5,596 m Jade Dragon Snow Mountain filled the view straight ahead. The wind was fierce and our fingers went numb, but nobody wanted to slow down. In Shangri-La at 3,200 m the air was thin, so we walked slowly to acclimatize. The golden roofs of the Tibetan Buddhist monastery glowed in the evening light.

• From Jinan airport we rode a bus for over three hours across the plains to Linzhou. The new e-bikes the trip leader prepared let us enjoy the views even on the climbs. The local guide asked each restaurant to suit Korean tastes, so the Chinese food went down well. The Linzhou cycling association guided our rides and even welcomed us with celebratory fireworks. Each time the fog lifted, ever bigger mountains appeared one behind another like a 3D film.

• Leaving at 7 a.m., we spent the whole morning climbing a gravel road on the flank of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. After a simple noodle lunch in a small village, we kept climbing on pavement. From the top, 25 km of singletrack and narrow village lanes led us downhill. We stayed two nights at a guesthouse in Baoshan, a village of houses stacked up the hillside.

• The gorge, said to be the world's deepest, and its churning rapids were overwhelming. From there we enjoyed a fun descent to a cozy, quiet country village. Over stone-grilled pork belly, riders from all over quickly became friends.

• We took the old Tea Horse Road through Tiger Leaping Gorge, between Jade Dragon and Haba Snow Mountains. The rocky trail has 28 bends, so most of us carried or pushed our bikes up. I rode a horse for part of the climb, with the Jinsha River coiling far below. Black-chicken soup and strong baijiu at the Tea Horse Guesthouse washed the fatigue away.
