Ride the Camino Francés from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France to Santiago de Compostela, with a support vehicle on every stage and twin-room hotels instead of albergues, including a night in a converted medieval monastery. Since 2026 it runs on e-MTBs only, which the organiser says any rider with 2 years of off-road experience can finish.
It was a bit harder than expected, but I followed the trip leader's back like a compass.
We got through hairpin descents, rough stony downhills and mud after days of rain.
The climbs were tough, yet we finished safely and still smiling.
At the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela we saw the Botafumeiro censer mass.

Less a pilgrimage than a reward for years of hard work, I set off as if on a school trip.
From Madrid we took the train to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France for our pilgrim passports.
Ahead lay 11 days and more than 800 km of the Camino by bike.
In Spain the sun didn't rise until after 8 a.m.
It turned out even better than I'd hoped: good food, good sleep and good riding.

I'd ridden 100 km in a day only once in my life, and day one meant crossing the Pyrenees.
At last we reached Santiago de Compostela in pouring rain.
The Camino was a boot camp for riding, and I'm grateful to the trip leader and the whole team.

Twelve days after leaving Saint-Jean, this was the last ride to Santiago de Compostela.
A local cycling race streamed past our lunch stop, and we cheered at the top of our lungs.
In the afternoon, climbs, forest trails, descents and rocky tracks kept coming.
At the trip leader's suggestion, we held an uphill race on the last climb before arriving.

We left Sarria on a chilly morning, and the first climb warmed us up quickly.
About an hour in, a bowl of ramen at the trip leader's regular spot thawed us out.
The road to Melide kept rolling up and down over the 'camel humps'.
Walking pilgrims grew in number from Sarria, so we rode with extra care on narrow paths.
Every 'Hola' and 'Buen Camino' we offered was answered warmly by the walkers.

In the morning we took a quick look at the albergue featured on the TV show 'Spanish Hostel'.
For a second day we climbed up and down the Galician mountains in scattered rain.
The climb to the St. James statue at 1,270 m kept going just when it seemed to end.
The 10-odd km descent through misty drizzle and strong wind was tense but thrilling.
