西蔵(チベット)自治区ラサ · 標高約3,650m
チベットの中心都市ラサは、標高約3,650mの広い川の谷にあります。街の南をラサ川が流れ、周りの茶色い山々の上には濃い青空が広がっています。空気が澄んで日差しが強く、晴れた日には空がとても近く感じられます。ルートの名前はここから来ています。

ヤムドク湖は、チベットの人々が聖なる湖とあがめる大きな湖のひとつです。標高約4,400mにあり、天気や光によって水の色がターコイズから深い青へと変わります。湖はいくつもの入り江となって山あいに入り込んでいるため、上から見ると複雑な形をしています。

茶馬古道は、雲南や四川のお茶をチベットの馬と交換した古い交易路です。馬やラバのキャラバンが荷を積んで高い山々を越え、雲南省北西部には道沿いに栄えた古い村や市場が今も残っています。

太行山脈は中国北部の河南省、山西省、河北省の境に沿って南北に延びています。赤みを帯びた岩が高さ数百mの断崖をつくり、そのあいだを深い峡谷が刻んでいます。

カラコルム・ハイウェイは、中国の西の果て、新疆のカシュガルの南から始まります。パキスタンへ向かう途中でパミール高原を越え、両側には7,000mを超える雪山が並んでいます。

A loop from Lijiang Old Town via Wenhai, the Jinsha River, Shangri-La, Baishuitai and the Naxi and Tea Horse guesthouses, crossing Tiger Leaping Gorge to Dali and around Jade Dragon Snow Mountain back to Lijiang. A rugged route the organiser has ridden more than a dozen times over 10+ years, now on e-MTBs; run once a year. Open to riders with 2+ years of experience.

An 11-day e-MTB journey from Kashgar, heart of the Silk Road, along the Karakoram Highway, the Panlong road with its 629 hairpins, the canyons of the Tian Shan and Kunlun ranges, and the Taklamakan Desert. It also takes in Khunjerab Pass, Uyghur life on the Pamir plateau and Kashgar's history. Open to anyone with 2 or more years of MTB experience.

A short 6-day trip riding the cliff-cut roads, deep canyons and high passes of Taihang, the 'Grand Canyon of the East', on locally rented e-MTBs. Based in Linzhou, four riding days take in the Hongqi Canal road, the cliff-hanging Guabi road, the Taihang Grand Canyon and Taihang Pinghu; no need to pack a bike. Open to anyone with 2+ years of MTB experience.

A 10-day trip travelling by ferry to ride the Yuntaishan, Linlüshan, Tianjieshan and Wanxianshan scenic areas of Taihang and the winding mountain roads linking remote villages. Physically demanding: suited to steady intermediate riders and e-bike fans; a consultation is required before signing up.

Kashgar is an old oasis city that was once the heart of the Silk Road. Xinjiang is part of China, yet its culture, language and people feel entirely different. The Sunday livestock market still carries on the region's old trading traditions.

Thirteen of us, staff included, rode the Tea Horse Road for ten days from April 6. Near Lijiang, the 5,596 m Jade Dragon Snow Mountain filled the view straight ahead. The wind was fierce and our fingers went numb, but nobody wanted to slow down. In Shangri-La at 3,200 m the air was thin, so we walked slowly to acclimatize. The golden roofs of the Tibetan Buddhist monastery glowed in the evening light.

From Jinan airport we rode a bus for over three hours across the plains to Linzhou. The new e-bikes the trip leader prepared let us enjoy the views even on the climbs. The local guide asked each restaurant to suit Korean tastes, so the Chinese food went down well. The Linzhou cycling association guided our rides and even welcomed us with celebratory fireworks. Each time the fog lifted, ever bigger mountains appeared one behind another like a 3D film.

Leaving at 7 a.m., we spent the whole morning climbing a gravel road on the flank of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. After a simple noodle lunch in a small village, we kept climbing on pavement. From the top, 25 km of singletrack and narrow village lanes led us downhill. We stayed two nights at a guesthouse in Baoshan, a village of houses stacked up the hillside.

The gorge, said to be the world's deepest, and its churning rapids were overwhelming. From there we enjoyed a fun descent to a cozy, quiet country village. Over stone-grilled pork belly, riders from all over quickly became friends.

We took the old Tea Horse Road through Tiger Leaping Gorge, between Jade Dragon and Haba Snow Mountains. The rocky trail has 28 bends, so most of us carried or pushed our bikes up. I rode a horse for part of the climb, with the Jinsha River coiling far below. Black-chicken soup and strong baijiu at the Tea Horse Guesthouse washed the fatigue away.
