Ha Giang Loop Ride, Vietnam

The Ha Giang Loop from Hanoi through Du Gia, Meo Vac, Dong Van, Yen Minh and Tam Son — the 'Tea Horse Road of Vietnam' — past the switchbacks of the Ma Pi Leng gorge, karst peaks, terraced fields and ethnic-minority villages. Early runs were on riders' own MTBs and gravel bikes; from late 2023 it was also offered on rental e-bikes. On an own bike it demands very good fitness.

  • For my second ride in Vietnam, I headed to the Mu Cang Chai area. On the first day we visited an old folk village that is still home to its residents. People live in the old houses and sell goods right out of them. Unlike the sharp peaks of Ha Giang, the mountains here were gentle and rounded. The rice terraces cut step by step into the slopes showed how much work went into them.

  • It was a seven-day loop of about 455 km around Ha Giang on e-bikes. On an e-bike, the climbs I used to dread turned into beautiful roads. Calling out "xin chào" to farmers, vendors and kids always brought back a smile. On day 3 the Khau Coc Cha Pass was dusty and mostly unpaved, but the views kept us stopping. Dropping from 1,300 m and climbing the switchbacks again, we were deep among sharp peaks.

  • Nine riders went to Ha Giang with the trip leader for ten days from late October. Two rode e-bikes rented locally, and the rest of us rode regular MTBs. On the climbs I was really jealous of the e-bikes powering up. The course was fantastic, full of thrills and scenery for mountain biking. Training beforehand is a must, but I was happy the whole way.

  • Right out of town the climbing began, so I shifted to the easiest gear and went slowly. On the way to Meo Vac, after lunch the trip leader took us off the busy road onto a narrow singletrack. The climbs had my thighs burning, but the scenery was great and the narrow descents were fun. At the top of a road coiled like a spring, the sky and clouds were beautiful. At a folk-village-style lodge we had a hot pot dinner and swapped stories with the group.

  • Under clear skies, the day again started with a climb and ended with a big descent. After a painful climb, the rocky peaks looked as grand as a scene from Jurassic Park. Around 1,000 m, on a road motorbike tours can't reach, we met children from a minority village. With 960 m of climbing I was tired, but kept thinking how glad I was to have come.

  • After pho near Hanoi airport, we took a bus all the way to Ha Giang. The Ha Giang hotel had good rooms and breakfast; after assembling bikes we did a ~20 km test ride. The first full day brought endless climbs on muddy, unpaved roads under construction, with some pushing. The views and cold wind at the summit, then the fast descent, were thrilling. At a riverside village guesthouse, hearty Korean-friendly food helped us recover.
