A 10-day trip riding Terelj National Park, the open steppe and the desert, with nights in gers under a sky full of stars. The organizer brought back this Mongolia ride after about ten years, and a support vehicle stays with the group throughout. It is rated three stars for fitness and two for skill, so it calls more for stamina than technique.

Rain kept falling on the last day, so we rode on through strong wind and rain. We crossed Mongolia's most beautiful pass, the steppe made even greener by the rain. On the endless climb we turned the pedals one stroke at a time in the lowest gear to the top. The vast field of yellow wildflowers and the village on the way down felt like paradise.
