South America Hotspots Ride + Patagonia & Iguazu

A month-long trip that rides from Cusco to Santa Teresa before visiting Machu Picchu, then rides La Paz's Death Road and the Uyuni salt flats and Atacama Desert, finishing with sightseeing in Patagonia (Perito Moreno Glacier, Fitz Roy) and at Iguazu Falls. Demanding stretches are skipped by vehicle and a support vehicle accompanies the whole route, so anyone with two or more years of riding experience can join. Some sections are at high altitude, so altitude sickness is possible.

  • In Peru we followed the Sacred Valley, winding through dozens of hairpin bends. We climbed Huayna Picchu, open to only 200 visitors a day, and toured Machu Picchu. We braved 5,000 m of altitude to see Rainbow Mountain. After riding the Uyuni salt flats and sand deserts, we crossed the border into Chile.

  • Once over the border, a 40 km descent carried us into Chile. The Valley of the Moon truly felt like landing on another planet. We stayed in every kind of lodging: salt hotels, stone hotels, tents and farmhouses. The winery tour, hot springs and first tastes of new foods were all a delight. The trip leader opened up bike travel for us, and the next trip is already booked.

  • On the way to Uyuni we stumbled upon a village beer festival. Camping a night on the salt flat brought sunrise, sunset and fierce winds after dark. We crossed the salt flat by bike and even lay down in the sand desert. Past hot springs and salt lakes with flamingos, we headed for the Chilean border.

  • With snowcapped peaks over 4,000 m around us, we rode the highest and most daunting roads. Meeting locals who smiled simply despite hard conditions was a joy. We pedaled on past llamas, alpacas and vicuñas. From Cusco we went via Ollantaytambo and Santa Teresa and climbed up to Machu Picchu.
