  • I'd only ever ridden a recumbent, but curiosity about riding abroad brought me to the Daisen tour. The group treated me like an old friend and waited when I was slow, so I made it to the end. What struck me most about Japan was how little of the landscape felt man-made. The trip got me curious about upright bikes like MTBs.

  • We crossed to Japan by ferry and rode around Mt. Daisen with a big group of riders. I worried about seasickness, but the sea was calm and I ate and slept well on board. Day one's climbs were a bit of a struggle; day two rewarded us with plenty of downhills. Despite the big group we finished on a happy note and parted hoping to ride together again.

  • We left Kanucha Resort and rode along the Pacific-facing coast. Passing through Uruma, Okinawa City and Ginowan, we rolled into central Naha. We reached the hotel around 3:30 pm and packed the bikes back into their boxes. Dinner was teppanyaki in Naha's busy downtown.

  • Following the trip leader through the lanes of Cape Zanpa, we rode the coast road and Route 58. Lunch near Nago port was fresh, generous sushi. Later we saw whale sharks at Churaumi Aquarium and had local liquor at a village pub.

  • After about two hours' flight from Incheon, Naha greeted us with a soft southern breeze. We reassembled the bikes and rode roughly 30 km to our hotel at Cape Zanpa. Traffic ran on the opposite side, and the road was lined with subtropical trees and sugarcane. At the hotel we soaked in the open-air hot spring and watched traditional Okinawan dance.
